What Is Polymer Chemistry?
What Is Polymer Chemistry?Polymer Chemistry is the study of the nature of polymer and its properties in terms of its molecular structure, stability, performance and applications. Polymer Chemistry has a long and rich history with great contribution to the sciences and the materials science in general. The basics of polymer chemistry is that, polymer is a complex structure that can be described by simple mathematics. In chemical terms polymer is defined as a molecular combination of solids or macromolecules with the repeating units being atoms or molecules. A monomer or monomeric system is the simplest kind of polymer. The intermolecular forces acting on a monomeric system are normally greater than that acting on monomeric systems of ordinary metals and non-metal. Another fundamental property of polymer is its ability to enter into a monomeric state.Polymer is also a group of polymers formed from smaller components. Among these are polymers consisting of very small molecules of sugar, f atty acids, starch and some metals. Some examples of these molecules are sugars, starches, cellulose, fatty acids, and some metals.Polymer Chemistry deals with the properties of polymer and its mechanical, optical, chemical and physical properties. These are the basis of material engineering and many other disciplines in the material sciences. The study of polymer is also referred to as 'Mechanical Engineering' and is a way of modeling the behavior of organic and inorganic materials. This study deals with the dynamic behavior of a material and how it interacts with its environment. It can also deal with how it performs with varying temperatures, pressures, force and friction.Polymer Chemistry is the study of the materials that compose these materials and how they react and interact with their surroundings. Polymer research is a broad term and includes a wide range of applications. There are several specialties in polymer chemistry including polymer engineering, polymer catalysis, and polymer and organic chemistry.

Clichés to Avoid
Clichés to Avoid Second language speakers of English demonstrate an impressive familiarity with English when they use clichés in their speaking. Using common expressions shows people that you have been exposed to a lot of English in your life and suggests that you have achieved an intermediate level of proficiency. Nevertheless, advanced second language writers and first language writers who use clichés seem unimaginative and dull. But what is a cliché anyway? What is a cliché? A cliché is a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought. It was once a lively and inventive phrase, but after it caught on it quickly became overused and tiresome. What is the origin of the word cliché? The word cliché means to clicked together. It comes to us from before the year 1825 from the typesetting trade. Instead of having to set every letter separately, typesetters would keep frequently-occurring words and phrases in handy reusable blocks to speed up the job of typesetting a page. A reusable block of letters What is wrong with writing in clichés? When people write in clichés, we wonder if they have chosen to express the idea that way or if that is the only way they know how to express the idea at all. Instead of being a sign of easy familiarity with English, we get the sense that the writer has never thought carefully about alternative phrasings. Worse still is when the writer gets the cliché wrong and comes out with an eggcorn like doggy-dog world. Thats really annoying. Here is a list of clichés to avoid 2.0 -gate does not suffer fools gladly a cautionary tale a chip off the old block a clean slate a crisis waiting to happen a dark and stormy night a diamond in the GCSE Poem analysis Carol Ann Duffys Medusa
GCSE Poem analysis Carol Ann Duffyâs â" Medusa Today is World Poetry Day, a day to appreciate and support poetry around the world. In aid of this, we thought weâd give a GCSE poem analysis from the AQA GCSE English Anthology: Medusa from poet laureate Carol Ann Duffyâs collection of poems, âThe Worldâs Wifeâ. The Worldâs Wife was published in 1999 and presents the female perspective on stories where the male character has traditionally taken centre stage. So who actually is Medusa? The character Medusa is one of the Gorgonsâ three sisters from Greek mythology, who had snakes for hair and whose gaze turned people to stone. Medusa has always been famous - but Duffy tells her story so that the reader gains some sympathy for this otherwise monstrous character. The poem A suspicion, a doubt, a jealousy grew in my mind, which turned the hairs on my head to filthy snakes as though my thoughts hissed and spat on my scalp. My brideâs breath soured, stank in the grey bags of my lungs. Iâm foul mouthed now, foul tongued, yellow fanged. There are bullet tears in my eyes. Are you terrified? Be terrified. Itâs you I love, perfect man, Greek God, my own; but I know youâll go, betray me, stray from home. So better by for me if you were stone. I glanced at a buzzing bee, a dull grey pebble fell to the ground. I glanced at a singing bird, a handful of dusty gravel spattered down. I looked at a ginger cat, a housebrick shattered a bowl of milk. I looked at a snuffling pig, a boulder rolled in a heap of shit. I stared in the mirror. Love gone bad showed me a Gorgon. I stared at a dragon. Fire spewed from the mouth of a mountain. And here you come with a shield for a heart and a sword for a tongue and your girls, your girls. Wasnât I beautiful Wasnât I fragrant and young? Look at me now. Overview Medusa is told in the first person as a dramatic monologue by a woman who is insecure and worried that her husband is cheating on her. The poem begins: âA suspicion, a doubt, a jealousyâ and it is this jealousy which has turned the woman into a gorgon and now everything she looks at turns to stone. This feeling of doubt resonates throughout the poem, exemplified in the line, âbut I know youâll go, betray me, stray from homeâ. Unlike our feelings towards the traditional monstrous character, this poem evokes empathy for the character as she is clearly distressed and suffering. Especially when she reminisces in the final stanza about the time she was young and beautiful, illustrating her complete lack of confidence. Nevertheless, she is still presented as a foul character who threatens the reader, with the line âBe terrifiedâ. The poem also ends with the line âLook at me nowâ which has a double entendre (double meaning). It could be read as a cry of despair or, as a threat â" if you did look at Medusa you would die! This leaves the reader feeling conflicting emotions for the character, probably similar to how Medusa herself feels in the poem. Form and Structure The poem is written in free verse and as it progresses, the importance of the living things Medusa turns to stone increases, going from a bee to a dragon and then to her husband himself. The poem is divided into stanzas of mainly equal length, apart from the final line: âLook at me nowâ. This gives the poem a dramatic ending, leaving the reader unsure whether to feel threatened by or feel sorry for Medusa. Language The poem is packed full of rhyme (including half rhymes, internal rhymes and in stanzas 3, 4, 5 and 6 some end rhyme). This rhyme helps to unify the lines and create a sense of rhythm. The end rhyme produces a sense of finality connected with the death of her victims. Sibilance is particularly used in the first two stanzas to create the sound of a hissing snake. Tricolons (groups of three) also develop the rhythm in the poem. E.g. âA suspicion, a doubt, a jealousyâ. In this case the rule of three also emphasises the power of emotions that Medusa is come over by, as ultimately this is what turned the lady into a gorgon. Rhetorical questions, e.g. âAre you terrified?â are used to involve but also intimidate the reader. The last two rhetorical questions in the poem: âWasnât I beautiful? Wasnât I fragrant and young?â could be addressed to her husband, begging him to show her some affection; they could also be addressed at the reader as she longs to be comforted - she is so horrified by this change in herself. The oxymoronic metaphor âbullet tearsâ emphasises the danger that Medusa brings, yet still evokes a sympathy from the reader because of her suffering. The whole poem is an extended metaphor for a jealous woman who is grieving for her partner and turns against him. The metaphor describing her husbandâs heart for a shield suggests that he didnât love her properly. Overall, the poem is distressing for the reader as we see a lady who has become paranoid through jealousy, further damaging her relationship with her husband as well as her own well-being as she struggles to find a lost identity. We hope these ideas have been useful and have helped you reflect in a bit more depth on what Carol Ann Duffy is trying to present. Why not have a read of some of the other poems in the collection (there are loads and some are great fun) and see if you can find any parallels? Need an extra hand with some English? Staying safe while teaching overseas
Staying safe while teaching overseas From speaking with Teach Away Placement Coordinators, we know that many teachers have concerns about safety when considering teaching overseas. This is totally understandable: moving overseas to a new country with an entirely unique set of cultural norms can be intimidating, especially when youâre moving alone and youâve never visited the city before. One of the benefits of working with a teacher recruitment agency like Teach Away is that we do all the necessary due diligence to make sure teachers are headed to a reputable, safe, and supportive environment. In fact, most countries worldwide have lower crime rates than the US and violent crime is much less prevalent in the UAE, Kazakhstan, or China than in the US. Generally speaking, if youâre smart and observe local culture and norms, teaching abroad will be a safe and rewarding experience. But to start off on the right foot on your international teaching adventure, act responsibly and think smartâ"start with our list of tips below. Do your research before you go Itâs really important to know a thing or two about your new country. Knowledge is power, after all, so familiarize yourself with the countryâs basic laws and customs before you leave. Youâll likely come across a lot of useful information. For example, many commonplace gestures in Western culture mean something totally different and even rude abroad. A thumbs up is one example of a rude gesture in the Middle East, South America, and West Africa. Youâll want to read up about whatâs appropriate and what isnât in each country. Itâs also not a bad idea to read travel advisories from reputable government sources. Much of the material posted there is precautionary, but itâs best to have a full picture of the region youâre interested in. Dress appropriately Observing how the locals dress and following suit will serve you well, especially if the local dress is moderate. This will prevent any unwanted attention. Keep a low profile and minimize the Western attire you go out in as well. This means baseball hats, sweatpants, jeans, etc. Familiarize yourself with your neighborhood Get to know your neighborhood well and learn which areas are safe and which arenât. Your school will likely have this type of orientation information for you. Because the school has its teachersâ best interests at heart, you wonât be asked to live in unsafe neighborhoods, but being aware of surroundings is still important. Many travel websites (like Wikitravel, for example), will share with you information about each neighborhood in a city and will give you tips on staying safe while abroad. Pay attention to your belongings As with anywhere you go, pickpockets target the unaware tourist, so do your best to avoid looking like one. Again, take care to minimize your profile by avoiding wearing flashy jewelry or watches. Remember that marketplaces, festivals, public transportation stations, and popular tourist sites are prime locations for petty theft. Keep copies of all your travel documents safe Store your documents and personal information (visas, passports, identification, etc) in a safe, secure place. If you're heading out around the city for the day, leave your passport and other important id at home. If you take smart steps and get into a good routine while teaching overseas, just as you do in your hometown, you should have no problems while youâre abroad!
How to Choose Which Language to Study
How to Choose Which Language to Study Studying a second language has become a requirement at many schools and colleges. Globalisation has much to do with this trend, but the personal benefits of learning a second language are compelling, as well. Choosing which language to study isn't necessarily an easy task, but whether you are passionate about learning another language or not, the choice should be taken seriously. Find out Your Options The first step in choosing a language to study is to determine which languages are offered at your institution. This step is important because you may be surprised to find out what languages are or are not offered. You may stumble upon a language that you didn't know was available but really sparks your interest. Explore Your Cultural Interests Once you've determined which languages are available to you, spend some time thinking about your interests and goals. Consider cultures or places that intrigue you. Perhaps you have family or friends that now live or used to live in another part of the world. Consider Your Sense of Sound Amelia Harper, writer for The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, advises people to choose a language that appeals to their ears. In other words, choose a language that you like the sound of. In order to learn a language, you must listen to it for many hours. Harper suggests finding internet sites where you can listen to music or conversations in other languages. Then, choose a language that you find pleasant-sounding. Investigate Your Subject Field Academic or career goals are also important to consider when choosing a language to study. Think about fundamental players in your field of study. If there are a wealth of contributions from speakers of a particular language, it would be beneficial to learn that language. You could read those contributors' original research and writing, too. Think of Careers Fluency in a second language is a major attraction for employers. Think about where in the world you may want to travel to or even live for a future career. Perseverance Helps This 9-Year-Old Figure Skater Make the Impossible Possible
Perseverance Helps This 9-Year-Old Figure Skater Make the Impossible Possible Perseverance Helps This 9-Year-Old Figure Skater Make the Impossible Possible Alvina, 9-years-old, Math Level K, Reading Level H A typical 1st grader is learning how to tell time, count coins, and count to 100. They most likely donât have homework every day, and when they do, it often involves large shapes, bright colors, and simple number exercises. This wasnât enough for Alvina. At just six years old, she noticed a classmate bringing unfamiliar and advanced work to school, that he would complete during their breaks. Alvina learned this was daily worksheet study for the Kumon Math Program, and wanted in. She begged her parents to enroll her, and promised she was ready for the new commitment of homework every day on material she had never seen before. Just three years later, at age nine, Alvina is studying quadratic equations â" advanced high school level math â" after she spends the regular school day in the 4th grade with her peers. âMy desire and motivation to go beyond my grade to learn more than what I was being taught at school convinced my parents to enroll me in Kumon,â said Alvina. âI have since learned where my weaknesses are and how to persevere through them, which has increased my self-confidence while demonstrating that practice really does make perfect.â Alvina is studying several years beyond her grade level through the Kumon Math Program, which has left her ample time to focus on her extracurricular passions. An avid figure skater, her dedication and extra time helped her achieve an award for most improved individual skater in her league. Off the ice, Alvina enjoys participating in church choir and drama club, practicing piano, scouting, and volunteering. She maintains a spot on the Spirit of Math National Mathematics Honor Roll, enjoys learning foreign languages, and has recently taken a liking to public speaking. Itâs clear that Alvina is always looking for a challenge and that doesnât stop with her career aspirations. She hopes to become a veterinarian because sheâd like to help animals who are suffering and unable to speak up like humans can. âKumon has helped me understand the importance of setting goals and working hard towards them, even if it takes many failures in the process,â said Alvina. âI now believe in myself no matter what and know that my hard work will lead to my future dreams coming true.â Alvina was one of 56 young innovators from across North America selected to attend Kumonâs 3rd Annual Student Conference. She traveled to Chicago, Illinois for a day of critical thinking, connecting, and learning with Kumon students just like her. What do you enjoy most about Kumon? Since Kumon allows me to learn new material without limiting me by my age or school grade, I enjoy overcoming the challenging problems in the worksheets by pushing myself a bit further to test my ability. How has Kumon helped you both in and out of the classroom? Kumon has helped me get through my schoolwork easily and efficiently! It saves me time not having to struggle with my homework so that I have more time to explore other new things and expand my knowledge. Outside of the classroom, I am learning piano by myself without taking any piano class. I think this is very similar to the Kumon Method because Kumon taught me the benefit of self-learning. I seek out the information on how to play songs by myself. For instance, I learned how to read the notes on internet sites and some apps to guide me on how to play the tunes. Without my Kumon experience, I probably would not have attempted to self-learn how to play piano. What achievements are you most proud of? I strive to make the impossible possible! Last year, I received the âMost Improved Individualâ at the Richmond Hill Figure Skating Club. I always want to take a step up the ladder to improve my skills, techniques, and knowledge not only in skating, but in everything I learn. I am not only recognized by them, but also, I am my own âmost improvedâ because of the effort I always contribute. I am also proud of receiving the âVirtue of The Month Perseveranceâ Certificate granted by my school to recognize my perseverance in the face of difficulties. What advice would you give to kids just starting Kumon? I would tell them not to give up, to try their best, and to take positive actions to patiently learn thoroughly. There is no fast track to success accuracy and efficiency will play a part along the way. What was your experience like at the Student Conference, and what was your favorite part? My experience at the Student Conference was unforgettable; meeting and sharing learning ideas with other top students from not only different cities, but also countries, really opened my eyes. My favorite part was when I went up to the stage and presented my submitted answer to everyone in the conference room. Who is your biggest inspiration and why? My biggest inspiration is meeting with Abby Chen at the Kumon Student Conference. I am impressed that sheâs not only good at Kumon and academics, but that she also worked so hard to achieve her goal to be a professional ballet dancer. She managed everything (time, spirit, and energy) so well and made her dream a reality. Discover even more student success stories.
